Curly hair in men works differently from most other hair types. Products that provide hold for straight hair—waxes, clays, pomades—crush curls, weigh them down, and do the exact opposite of what you want. Styling them well requires a different logic, and the right products to achieve this are not necessarily those you find first on the shelves.
This guide covers naturally curly hair and permed hair, which share the same basic needs, while also highlighting some important nuances.
What curly hair primarily needs
Even before discussing styling, there's a fundamental principle: curly hair is structurally drier than straight hair. The helical shape of the strand prevents sebum produced by the scalp from traveling evenly down the hair shaft. The result: without external hydration, curls dry out, swell, and frizz uncontrollably.
Any styling product used on curly hair must therefore fulfill two functions: hydrate the hair fiber and define the curl without stiffening it.
Styling cream: the basic product
Styling cream is the go-to product for men's curly hair, especially for thick and fine or thinned curls. It provides hydration, softens the hair fiber, and helps the curl form naturally without creating a crunchy effect or residue.

LAYRITE DELUXE Cream "Natural Matte Cream" - Medium hold, matte finish
It should be applied to damp hair, neither soaking wet nor dry. The ideal approach: towel-dry your hair after showering, then apply a pea-sized amount of cream to the lengths, working section by section. Avoid the roots to prevent weighing down the hair.
Next, scrunch the strands from bottom to top with your palms, a movement called "scrunching," to help each curl form. Let it air dry or, ideally, use a diffuser on low heat. Do not touch your hair during drying: this breaks the curl as it forms.
Hair mousse: volume without heaviness
Hair mousse is often underestimated for men, but it is one of the best allies for short to medium-length curly hair. It provides bounce and volume without weighing hair down, and holds better than cream alone on fine or loose curls.
It is also used on damp hair, as a replacement or in addition to cream. Apply a generous amount into your palms, distribute through the lengths, then scrunch. For stronger hold, the combination of cream + mousse on top yields significantly more lasting results.
Hair gel: for defined styling
Gel should be used when you want clear definition and long-lasting hold. On well-formed curls, it creates a light protective layer around each strand that maintains the shape for several hours. The "crunchy" effect that occurs during drying disappears when you gently scrunch your hair with your hand once dry.

American CREW Hair Gel "Firm Hold Styling Gel" - Strong hold, high shine
Gel is also worked into damp hair, after or instead of cream. On very fine hair, it can weigh it down; in this case, mousse remains the best choice.
Specific case: perms
A perm chemically alters the structure of the hair fiber to create artificial curls. The visual result resembles natural curls, but the fiber is more porous after chemical treatment, making it more susceptible to dryness and damage.
Note: it is not recommended to moisturize freshly permed hair for 72 to 96 hours after the treatment, to allow time for the hair fiber structure to settle.
After this period, two practical differences to remember. First, permed hair needs more hydration than naturally curly hair of the same appearance. A curly hair conditioner after each shampoo is not optional; it is what maintains the curl's flexibility over time. Second, avoid products with a lot of alcohol, which accelerate the drying of the hair fiber.
For styling, the logic remains the same: cream or mousse on damp hair, scrunching technique, drying without touching. But the amounts can be a little more generous than with natural curls, especially for cream. As a general rule, prioritize cream for thick curly hair, and mousse or gel for medium to fine hair.
Washing: don't neglect the basics
Good styling starts in the shower. A specialized shampoo for curly hair cleanses without stripping the hair's natural lipids, which most classic shampoos do. Ideally, shampoo twice: the first time to wash the scalp, the second to ensure deep cleaning—it's not the hair that's being washed, but the scalp. Wash two to three times a week maximum, never daily: curls need natural sebum to stay supple.
How to reactivate curls the next day
Curls lose their definition overnight. To reactivate them the next day without starting all over again, a curling spray or simply a little water on the strands is usually enough: lightly dampen, then scrunch again to restore shape and bounce to the curls.
What to avoid
Some common habits that work for other hair types become mistakes for curls. Rubbing with a terrycloth towel creates frizz; instead, use a cotton t-shirt or microfiber towel to blot by pressing. Oil-based pomades and waxes crush the curl and leave a residue that is difficult to rinse out.
Texturizing powder can be useful for adding texture to very loose curls, but it's not a basic product for this hair type. Our article on men's texturizing powder explains when and how it fits into a routine.

Frequently asked questions
Should products be applied to damp or dry hair?
Always to damp hair for curly hair. Creams and mousses need the water present in the fiber to distribute evenly and activate curl definition.
Does perming damage hair in the long term?
The chemical treatment temporarily weakens the hair fiber. With an adapted maintenance routine—mild shampoo, systematic conditioner, alcohol-free products—hair recovers well and the curl maintains for several months.
Can a texturizing spray be used on curly hair?
Yes, but as a complement and not a replacement for cream or mousse. We compare the two formats in detail in our powder vs. texturizing spray guide.
How long does curly hair styling last?
With a quality mousse or cream, curly hair styling generally lasts a full day. At night, a satin bonnet or satin pillow preserves the formed curls and avoids having to completely restyle in the morning.
